The Department

The Junior Museum & Zoo is part of the Arts & Sciences division under the Community Services Department where children and their caregivers come to explore, discover, create and play. Founded in 1934, the Zoo has grown to become home to more than 50 species of animals-about 200 specimens in all! We offer a menagerie of science programs for schools and community groups, as well as classes, summer camps and birthday parties for families. The Zoo's small but diverse collection of wildlife helps children develop a deeper understanding of the natural world and the relationships between people and animals.
The Position
Under general supervision, the incumbent will serve as a Zoological Assistant to the Curator (Arts, Sciences, Theater Specialist) and is responsible for maintaining excellence in all aspects of the care and welfare of the animal collection and associated animal exhibits and landscapes. The animal collection includes, but is not limited to arthropods, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals.
The Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate has already chosen a career path to work with both animals and people; and, cares for animals in the context of a zoo, museum, and all aspects of the daily care of the collection of exotic and domestic animals. Additionally, the ideal candidate would possess the follows skills/experience:
  • Ability to supervise and mentor volunteers
  • Ability to work effectively with co-workers, volunteers, and the public
  • Ability to use a computer
  • Ability to communicate well, both orally and in writing, to children and adults

This is a SEIU Hourly position that is budgeted to not exceed 1,000 hours per fiscal year. Essential Duties

Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Provides for the husbandry, including cleaning and feeding, of the animals in a fashion that encourages naturalistic behaviors while enhancing the well-being of the animals through specific enrichment programs.
  • Trains animals for health management of the entire collections as well as regularly scheduled demonstrations.
  • Participates with the monitoring and maintaining of the established criteria for life support systems, which include temperature and water chemistry.
  • Actively works with the public to engage their curiosity of science and nature.
Physical Demands: The work requires long periods of standing, walking over rough terrain, and crouching, reaching, and lifting items up to 60 pounds.
Working Conditions: Much of the work is outdoors or within support buildings. There is a variety of weather conditions, and there may be exposure to temperature and humidity extremes, animal pathogens and irritants. The incumbent is exposed to bites, scratches, and animal waste, and may be exposed to animal parasites and zoonotic diseases. Part of the work is carried out in a typical office environment. Incumbent may travel to meetings and conferences and on animal shipments. The incumbent must be able to work a flexible schedule which include weekends, holidays, and evenings, as needed. Minimum Qualifications


SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE
For this position, specialized experience is defined as: Applying biological facts, principles, methods, techniques and procedures necessary for the care, study and management of living, captive and exotic animals. Must have experience working with meerkats and lemurs. Will consider experience obtained by volunteer animal care work done through service programs (e.g. native animal rescue, etc.) and other organizations.
Educational Background: A degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position OR a combination of education and experience; courses equivalent to a major, as described, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Significant Factors: The incumbent must receive immunizations to guard against zoonotic diseases and is subject to regular medical screening.
Special Requirements:

  • Must have a valid California drivers license.
  • Must have current TB, tetanus and rabies vaccination; or, the ability to obtain within the first month of hire.
  • Must be able to pass a background check.

$3.41 effective the pay period including July 1, 2019.
