WHO MAY APPLY: This is a Civil Service closed-promotional opportunity open only to current Sheriff's Office employees who successfully meet the requisite experience by time of appointment.
Note: This recruitment will create an eligibility list that will be used to fill vacancies for up to two years based on the list certification date.
The Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) section of the Sheriff's Office has an exciting opportunity. We are looking for a proactive, self-motivated, forward thinking Latent Print Supervisor. This position will be supervising, training, organizing, directing and coordinating the efforts of the processing technicians and latent print examiners; keeping the Latent Unit in the forefront of a continually evolving discipline. Office location will be in Renton, however the majority of time may be spent in the field at various locations in the county.
WORK SCHEDULE: This position is overtime eligible with prior approval. Typical work week is Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. Overtime may be required to meet the needs of the work unit. Will also be responsible for a 24 hour call out phone.

Job Duties
  • Supervise staff and participate in hiring; set, review and document performance measures, goals and priorities; disciplinary actions; assist with labor relations issues; provide coaching, counseling, and monitoring and motivating team
  • Train new employees, ensure compliance with ongoing state and federal mandated training of employees
  • Oversee and direct use of equipment for quality staff output and minimize liabilities, by ensuring the most effective and efficient methods are applied
  • Manage daily workflow; maintain and optimize operational efficiency; research and draft policies; interpret and implement policies and procedures; make recommendations to management
  • Participate in planning, selection and implementation of new technology; assist in budget preparations
  • Collect, maintain and provide operational and statistical information on productivity, overtime usage and system efficiency
  • Responsible for 24-hour call out phone
Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience as a successful latent print examiner
Knowledge of:
  • Recovering, preserving, transporting and developing latent prints and evidence from crime scenes, knowledge of current chain of custody principles and practices
  • Automated and manual identification methods and procedures
  • Proper safety procedures for handling hazardous, caustic, flammable and carcinogenic chemicals and for contact with potential carriers of biological pathogens; risk management principles
Ability to:
  • Use sophisticated chemical, physical, optical and computerized scientific analysis techniques
  • Demonstrate good judgement and strong leadership; supervisory and organizational skills
  • Evaluate work performance of staff and recommend training to improve performance
  • Exercise authority in a positive manner and facilitate, mediate and resolve conflicts
  • Direct, delegate and follow up on projects assigned to others
Skill in:
  • Prioritizing competing deadlines with sensitive situations and time constraints
  • Conflict management; ability to problem solve and mediate problem solving
  • Identifying issues, determining the root cause(s) of issues, and developing appropriate preventative/corrective actions (process improvement)
  • Using current specialized databases and office publishing, word-processing, spreadsheet and email software programs; electronic, paper, alpha and numeric file systems
  • Oral and written communications, including effectively communicating ideas and conveying information pertaining to complex scientific issues to non-technical audiences
  • Maintaining confidentiality and security
  • Maintaining a professional demeanor at all times, including skills in giving clear, credible and persuasive expert testimony during judicial proceedings
  • Experience working collaboratively with a team and other agencies

COMMISSION REVIEW OF EXAMINATION RESULTS: In accordance with Civil Service Rules 8, Section 8.4.1, Commission Review of Examination Results, prior to certification from a new employment list, the overall test results must be accepted by the Commission. If the Commission rejects the results, it must state publicly its reasons for so doing. Notice of this discretionary power of the Commission will be clearly stated on all recruiting announcements.
CIVIL SERVICE ELIGIBILITY LIST: The candidates who successfully pass the required examinations will be referred to the Latent Print Supervisor certified eligibility list, in rank score order in accordance with all applicable provisions of the Civil Service Rules. The eligibility list will be used to fill vacancies for up to two years based on the list certification date.
