    Duties Summary

    This is a public notice flyer to notify interested applicants of anticipated vacancies. Applications will not be accepted through this flyer. Interested applicants must follow the directions in the "How to Apply" section of this flyer to be considered. There may or may not be actual vacancies filled from this flyer.     Responsibilities
    • Performs layout work on decks, bulkheads, lockers, furniture, electrical panels, and ventilation ducts.
    • Locates and marks reference points on sheet stock and at the worksite.
    • Repairs defective sheet metal equipment by removing components.
    • Installs non-structural members and attached sheet metal joiner work.
    • Installs ventilation ducts making alterations as needed to suit shipboard conditions.

    This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is the ability to do the work of a Sheet Metal Mechanic WG-09 without more than normal supervision such as:
    • Uses punches, drills, taps, snips, chisels, grooves, hammers, mallets, etc. Joins parts by riveting, bolting, and spot welding.
    • Cuts, punches, drills, bends and otherwise shapes sheet metal using shears, rolls, brakes, saws, and other metal working machines.
    • Re-locates and installs new parts and re-installs refurbished units.
    • Installs ventilation coolers, heaters, protective coverings, electro- static precipitators and other filtering media.
    • Performs vent surveys and conducts air distribution balancing using necessary computations and calibrated equipment.

    PHYSICAL EFFORT:
    Physical exertion is moderate and includes prolonged standing, climbing up and down ladders and scaffolding; working in cramped and awkward positions while installing items; and reaching, lifting, and bending while using hand and powered tools.
    Weight lifting seldom exceeds 50 pounds.
    WORKING CONDITIONS:
    You are subject to a moderate amount of noise and vibrations.
    You may be subject to smoke, fumes, dirt, and oil as is normal for a sheet metal mechanic in a shipyard.
    You may be required to work where ionized radiation is present.
    You are expected to work in a variety of weather conditions.
    You may be assigned to work areas where certain potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present, these agents may include, but are not limited to: fumes, dust, noise, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, chemicals, etc.
    This position is covered by the Department of Defense Priority Placement Program.
