Job Purpose

The Lab Technician I supports daily project tasks and lab work requests under supervision. The employee will be proficient at working with defined standard operating procedures (SOPs) and with guidance, making minor adjustments to established product lines to achieve requested project results. The employee must constructively interact with all other R&D personnel to facilitate a well-run organization.

Key Accountabilities

The Lab Technician I performs each essential duty safely, satisfactorily, and in a timely manner.

  • Undertakes R&D Fast Track processes including powder preparation, spraying, testing, and evaluation of powder coatings to meet specific project requirements.
  • Understand and follow a batch ticket (recipe) with high degree of accuracy for weights and measurements.
  • Follow daily work plan for Lab Work Request or project plan
  • Correctly label all samples whether powder or panels
  • Maintain clean and organized work environment
  • Identifying issues and root causeCollects data and information to understand (potential) issues and supports identification of root cause.
  • Implementing solutionsUses best-practices and past solutions for identified issues and implements prescribed steps for effective resolution.
  • Applying techniques, methodology and toolsDemonstrates basic understanding of relevant existing techniques & methodologies; follows the principles of techniques and methodologies in own work.
  • Promotes the quality system through adhering to the elements of and being familiar with the philosophy, quality statement, and procedures.
  • Promotes health, safety and environmental regulations by ensuring that standards, policies, and procedures are adhered to in compliance with corporate, federal, state, and local requirements.
  • Performs other duties as required for the success of Akzo Nobel Coatings Inc.
  • Attend and participate in Powder R&D Programs/Committees/Training as required, such as Department Safety, Behavioural Safety (BBS), Housekeeping Audit Teams, ISO, Life Saving Rules or any other safety programs.
  • Adhere to the Golden Principle which is simply to intervene to stop work if conditions or behaviour are unsafe.

Required Experience
  • High school diploma or GED
  • 0-2 years work experience in laboratory or manufacturing environment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication
