    Responsibilities
    • Performs a variety of tasks involved in packing and repacking non-hazardous and/or hazardous materials and items. Selects proper container and methods of packing, cushioning and follows specialized packing procedures.
    • Examines any prepackaged items to determine whether any repacking or over-packing is required, consolidates shipments; and applies certification, identification and shipping data.
    • Applies a wide variety of packing methods and techniques including blocking and bracing based on the search and application of regulations covering the packing and transporting of hazardous materials.
    • May pack, preserve, or re-pack material or items where techniques and procedures are standard and/or require little deviation from established methods.
    • May perform receiving, storing, shipment, and distribution of a variety of bin supplies, materials, equipment, and commodities using material handling equipment to include fork lift, stock selectors, etc.

    Qualifications To qualify for a Packer, your qualifications must include:
    Applicants will be rated in accordance with the Office of Personnel Management Qualification Standard for Trades and Labor Occupations. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties at the level for which you are applying. Emphasis is placed on how you gained the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time, and the required ability or potential to perform the job. Applicants who do not meet the screen-out element (SOE) will be eliminated from further competition.
    Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
    Physical Effort:
    Performs work on hard surfaces and in areas that require standing, stooping, bending and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Incumbent frequently lifts and carries parts, equipment and containers that weigh up to 40 lbs.Due to the sizes of fork lifts used most of the time and the heavy loads carried, the operator uses a moderate amount of strength in moving and stacking materials. Moving over rough ground causes a high degree of vibration to be experience by the operator.
    Working Conditions:
    Work is generally performed inside in areas that are well lighted, heated and ventilated. Incumbent may be required to work outside under windy and dusty conditions. Materials handled are sometimes dirty or greasy. Incumbent is exposed to possibility of cuts, scrapes, bruises, hazards of moving materials, handling equipment, certain eye hazards, and is exposed to danger of falling objects, collisions with other moving equipment and possible injuries caused by material shifting in unstable stacks.
