What We Want: The GHRC is seeking a Technical Laboratory Coordinator who will plan and perform routine and specialized microbiology and infectious disease research procedures and analyses; assist researchers with sample collection and processing; and ensure proper storage and handling of biological materials. The successful candidate will have Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology, Immunology, Molecular Biology, Virology, or other related field and have three or more years of hands-on technical experience in a virology or related microbiology biocontainment laboratory setting (BSL-2, ACL-2, BSL-3, ACL-3, or BSL-3Ag); prior experience working in Select Agent-registered laboratories; experience working with infectious agents in large animal species and/or insect vectors in the laboratory; experience using specialized analytical and high-throughput laboratory equipment platforms; and experience working with diverse individuals and students. Safety : This job has a potential for safety hazard exposures and infectious disease exposures, and requires the ability to work sometimes under challenging conditions (high humidity/temperature, unpleasant odors, animal excreta and noise). Requires mobility and agility to move quickly in a dangerous situation. The applicant may be required to take several showers each day, is required to wear appropriate personal protective equipment, and stand for prolonged periods of time.

Working Hours: May require working holidays, weekends, or “on-call” duty. Persons in this position are considered essential when the University declares an emergency, campus closure, class cancellations, etc., and are therefore required to report to work and remain on duty unless/until relieved by the direct supervisor.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology, Immunology, Molecular Biology, Virology, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Three years of hands-on technical experience in a virology or related life sciences biocontainment laboratory setting (BSL-2, ACL-2, BSL-3, ACL-3, or BSL-3Ag)

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Skills and ability to perform standard virology lab techniques including mammalian cell culture and virus propagation combined with routine molecular biology techniques such as nucleic acid extraction, purification, PCR and gel analysis
  • Knowledge of standard laboratory safety procedures including biosafety and hazardous materials
  • Knowledge of scientific equipment associated with biological sciences
  • Proficiency with word processing, spreadsheet, email, and presentation software
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to analyze data and written materials and give verbal and written recommendations
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively to ensure understanding
  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Three or more years of hands-on technical experience in a virology or related microbiology biocontainment laboratory setting (BSL-2, ACL-2, BSL-3, ACL-3, or BSL-3Ag)
  • Prior experience working in Select Agent-registered laboratories
  • Experience working with infectious agents in large animal species and/or insect vectors in the laboratory
  • Experience using specialized analytical and high-throughput laboratory equipment platforms
  • Experience working with diverse individuals and students

Preferred Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to cultivate and maintain professional working relationships with people of diverse backgrounds
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint)

Required Certifications and Evaluations:

  • Must be able to successfully obtain Biological Select Agent and Toxin certification
  • Must be able to undergo and maintain a favorable background investigation and National Select Agent Registration security risk assessment
  • Medical evaluation is required at least annually, and full participation in a medical clearance program is required, which includes blood testing and possibly vaccinations

Responsibilities:

  • Technical SupportPlans and performs both routine and specialized microbiology and infectious disease research procedures and analyses as specified in contract projects or to provide technical support to the range of principal investigators using the GHRC facility. Procedures will predominantly emphasize research involving viral pathogens and will commonly consist of managing and maintaining mammalian cell cultures combined with virus propagation, isolation, and molecular analysis. Assists researchers with sample collection and processing of samples. Utilizes and operates core facility scientific equipment to analyze research samples. Ensures proper storage and handling of biological materials, as well as and disposal of laboratory waste, including autoclaving materials for removal from biohazard areas, carcass disposal, and laundry.
  • Laboratory MaintenanceAssists with coordinating the daily operational activities of the BL-2, ABSL-2, ACL-2, BL-3, ACL-3, and BSL3-Ag laboratories to maintain a safe, clean and operational lab environment. Ensures adherence to lab standards and practices to maximize safety and operational effectiveness. Assists in coordinating day-to-day laboratory maintenance that includes ordering laboratory supplies, inventory control, performing equipment maintenance and cleaning of lab facilities, and maintenance laboratory safety manuals. Assists and observes scientific staff to ensure they are properly following facility safety SOPs. Works with facilities, science, animal groups and others and conducts decontamination of laboratory and animal suites via gas or vapor room decontamination and/or chemical disinfection. Assists in the annual recertification of laboratory containment. Conducts decontamination and verification of equipment from the containment laboratories before they are taken out from the containment laboratories. Evaluates existing laboratory facilities and recommends improvements. Assists in the development of procedures for the use of laboratory instrumentation.
  • Training and EducationPerforms hands-on laboratory training for new researchers and employees. Assists with the development and implementation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the facility. Assists research staff with routine safety practices, to ensure building SOPs are enforced. Assists in the development and update of instructional materials for laboratories.
  • OtherPerforms other duties as assigned.
