Full Description :

The Geophysical Institute at the Fairbanks has an immediate opening for a postdoctoral researcher in the field of planetary seismology. The new hire will engage in a project to establish likely bounds on the nature and amount of seismic activity on Venus, assemble a catalog of potential Venus-analog events using records from a variety of traditional and non-traditional seismic sources recorded in Alaska and elsewhere, and use the catalog to evaluate the viability of potential instrument designs and analysis algorithms for an eventual seismograph on Venus. This is a one-year project, but the expectation is that a strong performer could transition into a multi-year position within the GI conducting a TBD mix of terrestrial and planetary seismology. We are planning to hire as soon as possible in order to meet grant requirements. Due to the short time available to fill this position, this position requires that applicants currently be legally authorized for unrestricted employment in the United States. No work visas will be sponsored for this position. We ask that all applicants include when they would be available to start in their cover letter.
Duties: 100This project is in partnership with NASA Glenn Research Center, which has an ongoing engineering effort to develop a seismometer capable of surviving for an extended period in the Venus environment. During this 1-year postdoctoral appointment the person hired will: 1) Estimate the nature and level of seismicity on Venus guided by current understanding of the similarities and differences in Venus and Earth’s lithospheric structure and tectonic styles; 2) Using seismic records from across Alaska, create an organized catalog that contains type examples of seismic events from various natural and man-made (e.g., mining explosions) sources that could serve as potential analogs for Venusian seismic sources; 3) Evaluate the ability to determine various aspects of Venus seismicity under potential seismometer restrictions; and 4) Test and evaluate possible mitigation strategies for current seismometer design limitations.Essential

Experience processing, analyzing, and interpreting seismic records from earthquakes, volcanoes, explosions, and other natural and manmade sources.

General programming ability, especially with Python.

Familiarity with seisomology-related research on planets other than Earth.

Ability to conduct independent research in a small-team environment.

Ability to publish in relevant peer-reviewed journals.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Required Education and Experience:

PhD (already received, having completed all requirements and awaiting graduation) in Geophysics or in a relevant discipline.
