Position Title: Business Office Clerk

About Pickerington Surgery Center:

Pickerington Surgery Center is an Ambulatory Surgery Center Joint Venture with OhioHealth located on the Pickerington Medical Campus in Pickerington, Ohio. The center services multiple specialties including: orthopedic, spine, podiatry, gynecology, urology, gastrointestinal, colo-rectal, general, pain management, and plastic surgery.

Position Purpose: To support the facility by greeting patients/visitors, maintaining appearance of the lobby, answering switchboard, and acting as a resource for facility. Registers patients on the day of surgery, oversee Medical Records, and performs other medical office functions. The Business Office Clerk will function within the Center’s policies and procedures, support PSC Values, PSC Vision and PSC Mission.

Position Reports to: Business Office Manager

Position Supervises: None

Degree of Supervision Provided to Position:

Minimal and according to management guidance, must be self-directed and able to work independently.

Education, Experience, and Licensure:

High school diploma or equivalent; three – five years’ experience in a medical office, hospital, outpatient surgery center or related field; Computer experience, Excel, Word, Medical Billing Software and Applications; Working knowledge of Medical Terminology.
Internal Relationships (Works Closely With):
As a representative of Pickerington Surgery Center, all comments, attitudes, actions, and behaviors have a direct effect on the Facility’s image and perceptions of quality service. Interaction with patients, families, physicians, referral sources, affiliating schools, visitors, volunteers, co-workers, supervisors, vendors, etc. must be in a manner that is friendly, supportive, courteous, respectful, cooperative, and professional. This behavior should promote an atmosphere of teamwork, which is congruent with Facility standards and guidelines to promote positive relations.

  • Oversee and maintain facility traffic
  • Retrieve/process mail
  • Prepare daily deposit
  • Medical Records
  • Breakdown of prior day charts
  • Maintain filing of documents and filing system
  • Patient balance collection calls
  • All other duties as assigned

Job Requirements:
Skills and Abilities:


  • Possess basic knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Knowledge of insurance lines of business.
  • Knowledge of standard coordination of benefits methodology.
  • Typing or keyboarding skills.
  • Knowledge of office machines (i.e. computer, scanner, fax, copier, multi-line phone system with voicemail, etc.).
  • Knowledgeable of HIPAA guidelines, Red Flag Rules, and Medicare Conditions of Coverage requirements
  • Versatile and willing to coordinate with and participate in, when necessary, all other aspects of the Business Office.
  • Possess strong initiative to get daily work finished and processed.
  • Is courteous, understanding and sympathetic toward patients, physicians and others.

  • Maintains attendance according to guidelines and policy established by facility.

Adheres to tardiness policy.

Provides notification for unscheduled absences or tardiness in accordance with established departmental procedures as noted by supervisor.

Requests scheduled time off according to procedure as noted by supervisor.

Completes all documentation to ensure the availability of accurate and up to date information in accordance with established standards.

Adheres to established facility safety requirements and procedures to ensure a safe working environment.

  • Demonstrates to competent usage of proper body mechanics in all activities.

Identifies potentially unsafe situations and notifies supervisor.

Completes all Teammate/patient event and Variance documentation in a thorough and timely manner, as required by policy.

Demonstrates complete understanding of established emergency procedures for facility.

Practices infection control, standard precautions and universal precautions as instructed or trained.

Maintains work area and equipment in a neat, organized manner.

Completes appropriate financial management responsibilities.

  • Provides input re: equipment needs/supply needs.

Completes patient charges in accordance with facility procedure and per facility policy.

Demonstrates sound cost containment techniques.

Assists with housekeeping tasks as necessary to provide a safe environment for patient’s, teammates, physicians, guests.

Performs all other duties as assigned by management.

  • Proficiency or Productivity Standards:

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: Indoors in climate-controlled environment. Patient care environment with potential exposure to unpleasant odors, to blood and body fluids which may carry infection, to infectious disease, and to chemical and electrical hazards. Occasional exposure to outdoor climate.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to answer telephone; Ability to sit for long periods of time; Ability to lift 15 lbs; Hand/finger agility necessary to typing, computer use and filing; Good hearing, clear/articulate speech, and visual acuity.

MACHINES/EQUIPMENT USED: All office machines including PC’s, Copier, Fax, Phones, and 10 Key.
