QUALITY MENTOR

PROGRAM: Head Start/Early Head Start

RESPONSIBLE TO: Director

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education, or related field. At least three years of experience teaching in a classroom based setting preferred. Mentor must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, and must demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the basic principles of appropriate early childhood development.

The Mentor must be able to stand, sit, bend and walk for periods of time to meet job requirements. Must have physical and TB test, and be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Must possess a valid driver’s license, automobile liability insurance and have reliable transportation to travel to and from work, home visits, trainings and meetings (will receive mileage reimbursement based on OVEC’s travel policy). All Head Start positions must clear and pass state criminal history records check and sex offender registry check prior to hire date and pass Child Abuse and Neglect state registry check (CAN) within 90 days of hire.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

Know Head Start Performance Standards as well as Kentucky Childcare Licensing regulations and Head Start and OVEC Policies and Procedures.

Actively participate in the Program Planning Committee.

Know and understand Child Care Licensing, STARS, ITERS (Infant Toddler Environmental Rating Scale), ECERS (Early Childhood Environmental Rating Scale), and CLASS (Classroom Assessment Scoring System) as applicable to position.

Observe teaching staff and share observations and recommendations with leadership at the center (e.g., director) and at OVEC (e.g., Local Area Managers, Specialists, and/or Director).

Train individual teachers and assistants in planning, developing, and implementing the Head Start early childhood education program as outlined by OVEC.

Provide a comprehensive education and child development service that includes curriculum development, materials, equipment, and staff training that meets the Head Start Performance Standards.

Review data in the education tab in ChildPlus (home visits and parent/teacher conferences) for completeness and accuracy.

Develop and implement quality assurance including on site visitation, program review, records review, consultation and follow up.

Provide and oversee securing educational supplies, equipment, materials and resources for use in delivery of the educational services.

Maintain a cooperative attitude with all staff in the role of policy implementation, mentoring, advising, and training.

Train and mentor all education staff in appropriate teaching strategies.

Maintain a KY Trainer Credential.

Conduct monthly site meetings, as assigned.

Oversee lesson plans, classroom schedules, and schedule CLASS observation reflections.

Coach and mentor classroom staff, on curriculum fidelity and facilitate assessment based planning, utilizing Teaching Strategies Gold, CLASS, ITERS, ECERS, and other tools as necessary.

Share information with teachers and assistants related to OVEC Head Start/Early Head Start program procedures.

Model appropriate teaching practices for teachers and assistants and lead discussions on what was demonstrated. Give guidance and ideas regarding classroom time management, discipline, scheduling, planning, and organizing the day.

Assist teachers and assistants in analyzing and arranging the physical environment of the Head Start/Early Head Start classroom.

Utilize leadership styles that are appropriate for individual teachers and assistants.

Promote a growth mindset and support teachers and assistants in improving their performance.

Develop and monitor individual coaching plans, with specific goals and areas for growth identified which are based on classroom and teacher observations.

Assist in resolving conflict between education staff through a variety of effective strategies and assist the staff with problem solving.

Promote reflection among teachers and assistants.

Implement recommendations of the Child Development Manager, specialists and director.

Model professionalism for staff such as working cooperatively with peers and continuing ones own professional development.

Maintain a positive, calm attitude and a soft voice, and assure the same in all those working in the classroom.

Protect all children from physical punishment or verbal abuse by anyone in any program activity, and immediately report any such incident to the appropriate agency.

Assist staff in utilizing observation, screenings, and problem solving for individualization and identification of children for possible referral for suspected mental health concerns or disabilities.

Attend training opportunities provided and all staff meetings called by the director.

Review and address immediate health and safety concerns related to children.

Coordinate classroom activities/strategies with Mental Health and Disability Consultants.

Coordinate with other central office staff and managers to implement training for field staff and others.

Maintain documentation of monitoring, coaching, and training activities.

Responsible for monitoring, documenting, and reporting classroom teacher/child ratios.

Additional duties as assigned.

COMPENSATION: Annual contract with a maximum contract of 240 days. Salary based on rank and experience in accordance to OVEC’s Head Start/Early Head Start Certified Employee Salary Schedule.
