The Department of Corrections is seeking a highly motivated and qualified individual for a Correctional Sergeant located at Washington Corrections Center for Women, Gig Harbor, Washington.

AGENCY PROFILE:
The Department of Corrections, as a partner in the criminal justice system, enhances public safety, administers criminal sanctions and programs in accordance with the law, and provides leadership for the future of corrections in Washington State. The Department consists of the Office of the Secretary, Prisons Division, Community Corrections Division, Administrative Services Division, and Health Services. The Department employs over 8,500 staff and has a biennial budget of approximately $1.6 billion.
WASHINGTON CORRECTIONS CENTER FOR WOMEN is a 62.6-acre facility located approximately two miles from Gig Harbor. The site includes living units, administration buildings, a health clinic, education buildings, a gymnasium, a chapel, industries buildings, food service buildings, and support facilities.

Duties

This position supervises and assists correctional officers as they perform custody work to ensure the safety and security of an adult correctional facility, unit, offenders, staff, and the public.
The duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Supervises, monitors progress, and provides on-the-job training; participates in the Correctional Officer Field Training Program.
  • Maintains complete operational knowledge of the Incident Command System (ICS), awareness and preparedness to respond to any emergency situation.
  • Conducts Emergency Response Preparedness exercises and reports.
  • Critiques, conducts debriefing with staff for training and development.
  • Responsible for accuracy of offender/facility count.
  • Assist in transport of offenders outside the correctional facility perimeter.
  • Communicates all offender movements as directed; changes to housing/bed assignments of offenders.
  • Responsible for accountability of facility keys (Key Control) stored in Major Control.
  • Send law enforcement notifications.
  • Completes staff evaluations and routine supervisory conferences.
  • Monitors facility communications via the radio base station.
  • Addresses any safety and security concerns.
  • Prepare documents for approval by the Correctional Lieutenant.
  • Report orally, and in writing all problems and/or concerns to the Correctional Lieutenant.
  • Reviews/approves requests for procuring equipment and supplies.
  • Initiates staff corrective action as required. Assists and conducts investigations, as assigned. Investigates and reports incidents of irregular and/or suspicious occurrences and takes appropriate actions.
  • Conducts routine Personal Management Interviews (PMI) to address positive or negative issues, and staff training development. Prepare performance and Development Plans (PDP) on assigned staff.
  • Conducts audits, assists with the revisions of Institutional Operational Memorandums. Reviews and remains current with all Institutional Operational Memorandums and Post Order manuals. Maintains logs and other records.
  • Attends scheduled meetings, participates in teambuilding activities, attends internal/external training courses, and communicates support needs and future goals to the Shift Lieutenant.
  • Conduct Grievance, Tort Claim and PREA Investigations.
Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
High school diploma or GED AND three (3) years experience as a Correctional Officer in adult corrections.
OR
Two (2) years experience as a Correctional Officer in adult corrections AND successful completion of thirty (30) semester or forty-five (45) hours of accredited college-level course work.
Demonstrated ability to:

  • Write clearly, factually, and concisely
  • Recall detailed instruction
  • Maintain attention and concentration for extended periods of time
  • Use oral and written communication effectively in routine and emergency situations

The most competitive candidates will have experience supervising employees in a correctional environment. Supplemental Information
