The shelter assistant is responsible for learning and performing every aspect of animal shelter operations, including but not limited to: cleaning cages, kennels, and facilities; providing daily care, training, and socialization to shelter animals; providing administrative/clerical support; assisting with intake and medical care; other jobs as needed related to fundraising or facilitating adoptions and foster care.


  • 2-years of customer service or animal care experience, non-profit experience a plus
  • Must be computer proficient and able to learn shelter software
  • Strong desire to improve the lives of all animals
  • Growth-minded, eager to acknowledge and learn from mistakes


  • Must have good written and verbal communication skills
  • Must be highly organized, motivated, and detail-oriented
  • Must be organized and able to set priorities
  • Must be able to work well in a team environment with the public,

co-workers, and volunteers

  • Must demonstrate emotional maturity and good judgment
  • Must have basic knowledge of Cat/Dog breeds and animal behavior
  • Must be committed to the mission, values, and goals of the Belleville Area Humane Society
  • Must be highly motivated to learn and perform new skills outside of this job description


  • Physical ability to clean kennels and cages required
  • Must be able to handle large, fast-moving, disobedient animals with patience and kindness
  • Allergies that are aggravated by animals or cleaning supplies may be a disqualification
  • Must be able to work outside in all weather conditions
  • Must be able to stand, kneel, walk for up to 8 hours per day
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds



  • Greet customers as they come into the shelter and provide any necessary assistance
  • Assist with giving medication, drawing blood, and other veterinary procedures
  • Follow-up with adopters to assess how their pet is adjusting to their new home
  • Educate customers and the public about animal care, behavior, and training
  • Rotate dogs for their outside time, help facilitate play-groups, and provide enrichment activities


  • Follow BAHS protocols to clean the animal kennels, cages, and shelter facilities
  • Operate laundry equipment
  • Wash dishes, Take out trash, Operate light power equipment


  • Answer phones in a courteous manner
  • Data entry, filing, organizing office materials
  • Monitor the BAHS hotline
  • Greet customers in a friendly and professional manner
  • Learn to use our shelter software systems to update animal records, enter donations, register customers for events, etc.
