Shift Hour : Sun – Thurs 09:30 – 18:00 or Tues – Sat 09:3018:00

The Hospital Clinical Laboratory Assistant primarily facilitates the receipt and reporting of any clinical lab specimen results to be prepared or processed by the UCD Health Pathology and Lab Medicine Department via all means of communication, e.g., telephone, fax, email, website portal, etc. Specimens handled include various body fluids, tissue and fecal matter. This position requires the ability to abide by HIPAA regulations and ensure that all required documentation is cataloged, accurate and in compliance with all regulations. Ensures patient and physician notice and rescheduling of lab canceled procedures. Other duties include filing, recordkeeping, and back-up support for the Clinical Pathology Sendout and Decedent Affairs and Autopsy Services departments.

Required Qualifications
  • Relevant laboratory experience and working knowledge of laboratory protocols.
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology, basic human anatomy and clinical knowledge to complete assigned tasks and meet department business needs.
  • Demonstrated customer service skills.
  • Ability to maintain records legibly and accurately.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Knowledge and ability to operate a personal computer
  • Reading skills to understand procedures, protocols, and policies.
  • Visual acuity is required to perform activities such as reading thermometers, charts and finely ruled divisions.
Preferred Qualification
  • Experience working in a clinical laboratory.
  • Possess mathematic skills for performing routine laboratory calculations.
  • Possess tact and diplomacy to effectively deal with clinic, laboratory personnel and individuals outside of the hospital environment in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Experience with Laboratory and Health Information Systems (LIS/HIS
  • Manual dexterity for pipetting specimens and operating and cleaning automated equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain file logs and manage filing documentation in the desired alphabetical, chronological and/or numerical order, such that it is current and easily retrievable.
  • Knowledge of pertinent laws, regulations, and guidelines governing medical records; confidentiality, privacy, and provision to others, including HIPAA.
Special Requirements

Must obtain EDRS & FDRS (State Death Certificate System) Training within 6 months of appointment. Must be able to work overtime as needed and rotate weekends, holidays and “on call” hours per departmental staffing policies. Must be able to work variable shifts to provide 24-hour coverage. TB test required annually per JCAHO regulations. Must have a valid State of California Driver's License if operating University motor vehicles. Visual acuity is required to perform activities such as reading thermometers, charts and finely ruled divisions. Must be able to lift, move, and handle objects weighting up to 44 lbs. Required to utilize body mechanics (walking, sitting, standing, bending, squatting, climbing, kneeling, grasping, pushing, pulling, and reaching) when necessary to carry out all job duties and functions.

This position may be subject to a criminal background investigation, drug screen, Live Scan fingerprinting, medical evaluation clearance, and functional capacity assessment.
