The Animal Caretaker is assigned to the Veterinary Medical Unit (VMU), Research Service, VA Medical Center, VA Eastern Colorado Health Care System. Duties include, but may not be limited to the following:
NOTE: This is a TERM appointment (not-to-exceed four (4) years). Term appointments are non-status, nonpermanent appointments of limited duration (more than one (1) year but not more than four (4)). Term employees are eligible to earn leave and generally have the same benefits as permanent employees including health and life insurance, within-grade increases and Federal Employees Retirement System and Thrift Savings Plan coverage. Term appointments may be extended without further competition (up to the four (4) year maximum). The appointment to a Term position does not confer eligibility for promotion or reassignment to other positions or the ability to be non-competitively converted to permanent employment.
- Removes dead research animals from cages, completes necessary forms, notifying designated individuals of the death and disposal of the animals.
- Assists the other animal care staff in changing of animal cages, which involves proper handling of research animals.
- Keeps daily log that includes room temperatures and humidity, animal census, supply inventory status and notification of supervisor when changes occur.
- Ensures sanitation of Veterinary Medical Unit supports areas., using specialized chemical and techniques for this purpose.
- Maintains areas such as the Veterinary medical unit procedure rooms, hallways and stairwells, office and staff rooms used by Veterinary medical unit personnel, and storage areas housing food, bedding cages and equipment.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position.
PHYSICAL EFFORT: The work often requires lifting and carrying feed materials weighing up to seventy-five (75lbs) pounds and frequently handling such items as feed bags weighing fifty (5olbs) pounds. Animal Caretakers walks or stand for extended periods and frequently work in a bent position. Often, light physical effort is required to lift or handle docile animals.
WORK CONDITIONS: The work is performed in the Veterinary Medical Unit. There is daily exposure to materials in a controlled environment that may be infections and/or hazardous to one's health. Proper protective equipment is issued, and the Animal Caretaker will be trained in its proper use. In addition, the Animal Caretaker must perform when confronted with unpleasant conditions such as noise, heat, and sick animals.
