Job Description

Job Title: Shelter Advocate

Reports To: Shelter Manager

Work Area: Shelter

DUTIES:

The function of the Shelter Advocate is to provide necessary shift coverage for the overall operation and function of Ruby's Place shelter for women and children who are victims of domestic violence and/or human trafficking. Additionally, the Shelter Advocate will provide support and assistance to Case Management staff. The Shelter Advocate will report to the Shelter Manager.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Monitor the shelter program during the day, evening, and/or overnight shifts.

Provide general information and referral to hotline callers.

Perform telephone screening for potential clients.

Basic maintenance and cleaning tasks (cleaning, chore supervision, stocking, and general supply inventory).

Assist with data entry, filing and additional clerical duties.

Provide confidential, holistic, client-centered, trauma-informed services.

Orients new residents to shelter facilities.

Assist with general shelter operations.

Other duties as assigned by the Shelter Manager.

QUALIFICATIONS:

The Shelter Advocate shall preferably have an Associate’s degree in social services or enrolled in similar program at an accredited four year College/University and shall possess experience in crisis intervention, individual and group counseling, and client advocacy. Previous work in a domestic violence and or homeless setting providing direct services to women with children is preferred.

Experience may be substituted for the education requirement. The Shelter Advocate will possess an understanding of the dynamics of abusive relationships and a commitment to preventing violence in the home, knowledge of Trauma Informed Care as well as an understanding of, and sensitivity to, serving diverse populations. The State mandated 40-hour Domestic Violence counselor certification is required. Must be able to lift 25 lbs. Must possess a valid CA driver's license, proof of insurance, and be approved by Ruby's Place insurance as a driver. Fingerprints and background check required.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Works in a well-ventilated and properly lit office but mostly works in the indoor and outdoor program area conducting and supervising client activities. Must be able to stand for long periods of time and perform physical activities. Occasional travel required. May be required to lift up to 50 lbs. Subject to frequent interruptions. Must be able to multi-task, and handle stress. Frequent interaction with clients, staff, families, volunteers, and service providers.

PERSONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

Ability to follow oral and written directions. Must be flexible, creative and take initiative in handling emergencies. Compassion and understanding for people in crisis. Strong administrative, interpersonal and communications skills. Willingness to further education.

LANGUAGE SKILLS :

Ability to write business correspondence, reports and applications. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups and individuals.

REASONING ABILITIES :

Ability to problem solve with clients and co-workers towards accomplishing client case management goals, program goals and objectives, and funding requirements.
