    Duties Summary

    The full-time Food Service Worker works in the Nutrition and Food Services. Work is performed with identified steps and/or sequences. Work assignment may be during breakfast, lunch, dinner or rotating shifts. The Food Service Worker ensure the provision of high-quality food and service.

    Responsibilities

    The Robley Rex Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) improves the health of our veterans by providing a continuum of care through an integrated health care delivery system. We are a tertiary care facility classified as a level 1b facility affiliated with the University of Louisville, as such integrates teaching, research, and advanced patient care, making it an attractive academic medical center. The facility offers a full spectrum of comprehensive health care services, using state-of-the-art technology and innovative programs, as well as education and research benefits to Veterans residing in 40 counties in central and western Kentucky and in southern Indiana.
    The full-time Food Service Worker performs tasks with several steps or a sequence of tasks that require attention to work operations, follow set procedures in accomplishing repetitive assignments, and follow an established sequence of work. The incumbent's duties include, but are not limited to:

    • Set-up tray lines, steamtables, dining room tables and side service stands with hot and cold food items.
    • Serve food tray assembly line by placing uniform portions of food on plates.
    • Brew coffee, assemble and toss fresh fruit or green salads in quantity using prepared dressings and portions.
    • Make cold sandwiches using prepared ingredients and pack box lunches.
    • Set-up and operate a mechanical dishwasher; remove inspection doors, strainer pans, screens and spray arms for preventive maintenance and cleaning.
    • Set-up, operate and clean a pulper.
    • Scrape, soak, scour and scrub the heavier cooking utensils such as mixing bowls, baking pans, etc.
    • Perform heavy duty cleaning tasks (i.e. cleaning ceilings and exhaust hood, moving equipment, washing floors and walls, move heavy garbage cans, etc.)
    • Unload food delivery trucks. Assist with loading and unloading of food transportation containers.
    • Break down and clean assigned area when meal is finished. Return soiled trays and dishes to the dish room.
    • Deliver and retrieve meal trays to/from the patient's bedside or dining room. Deliver nourishments.
    • Maintain knowledge of safe and sanitary work practices. Follow established safety practices.

    Physical Requirements: The work requires continuous walking, standing and bending. Some lifting of moderate weight is required.
    Working Conditions: The work is performed in a well-lighted, well ventilated kitchen setting. The incumbent is subject to usual hazards associated with the setting, i.e. temperature ranges, cuts, burns, spills, etc. There may be contacts with contagious diseases. Travel Required

    SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element. The screen-out element for this position is the "Ability to do the work of the Food Service Worker without more than normal supervision." Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated.The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements:

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
    Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
