Summary:

With little to no supervision, handles a portfolio of first and third party ocean marine claims, throughout the entire claim’s life cycle – from coverage determination through legal liability assessment and quantum analysis, to timely and accurate resolution. Throughout the claim life cycle, you will ensure mitigation of indemnity and expense exposure and provide timely communication to both internal and external stakeholders on claim developments and outcomes.

Responsibilities:

  • Receives claims assignments. Verifies and determines applicability of coverage.
  • Determines the method and extent of investigation for each claim as required by company claims procedures and best practices guidelines. Conducts field investigation where necessary. Reviews and manages outstanding files, as assigned, for adequacy and timeliness of investigation, evaluation and reserve and maintains a timely diary for each case.
  • Evaluates and adjusts claims with the highest dollar exposure, within the limits of authority.
  • Reports directly on technical matters to manager, or Home Office personnel as required.
  • Evaluates anEd manages litigated claims, determines future course of handling and proper method of disposition. Consults with manager on those claims where assistance and consultation is needed as well as on those claims that exceed assigned authority.
  • Assesses recovery potential and is responsible for the development of information required to successfully pursue recovery.
  • Accountable for the equitable and prompt adjustment and management of assigned claims to disposition in accordance with company claims policies.
  • Responsible for providing superior customer service to all agents, insureds and others encountered during the claims handling process.

Requirements:

  • Five years or more experience handling complex first and third party ocean marine claims.
  • College degree preferred.
  • Some travel required.
  • General knowledge of litigation processes is required
  • Policy language skills enabling accurate and consistent policy wording interpretation is required.
  • Knowledge of contracts and contractual relationships is an asset.
  • Good communication and negotiating skills are assets.
  • Will abide by departmental policies and procedures, including authority levels, to comply with C&F’s risk management controls.
