SUMMARY

Senior Traffic Control Technicians working within the Merit System are responsible for overseeing and participating in the installation of traffic signals, intersections, street lights, cameras and street signs. Their primary focus is performing electronic work (e.g., programming microchips, programming traffic signal phases, etc.) associated with the installation, programming, and troubleshooting of electronic traffic control cabinets and emergency sirens . They create traffic reports detailing necessary traffic control changes that are required for intersections (e.g., signals, signal phases, lane changes, etc.) and communicates changes to appropriate parties. Senior Traffic Control Technicians are also responsible for receiving work orders for installations and repairs and assigning requested orders to subordinate staff. They receive general supervision by senior traffic engineering staff and their work is reviewed based on completed work orders and reports submitted.

TYPICAL JOB DUTIES:

  • Communicates with coworkers, supervisors and other officials by using verbal and written, communication in order to complete work orders in an efficient manner.
  • Performs electrical work (e.g., running wires, cutting loops, etc.) associated with the installation, maintenance, and replacement of traffic signals, street lights, ballpark lights, and emergency sirens utilizing the National Electrical Code and related tools in order to power electrical components of projects.
  • Performs electronic work (e.g., programming microchips, programming traffic signal phases, etc.) associated with the installation, programming, and troubleshooting of electronic traffic control cabinets and emergency sirens utilizing electronic theories, principles, and related tools in order to power electronic components of projects.
  • Oversees and participates in the installation of traffic signals, intersections, street lights, cameras and street signs.
  • Supervises staff by assigning and distributing work, directing staff in their job duties, monitoring progress of work, providing feedback and/or training.
  • Completes traffic reports detailing what necessary traffic control changes need to be made at intersections (e.g., signals, signal phases, lane changes, etc.) to engineers and smaller jurisdictions.
  • Receives work orders from various sources (e.g., Traffic Superintendent, city officials, Chief of Traffic Control Operations, Traffic Engineer, etc.) in writing, and verbally.
  • Troubleshoots traffic control boxes, intersections, loops, or emergency sirens when malfunctioning using voltmeters, amperes, test lights, etc. to restore proper operation.
  • Replaces components inside controller boxes and emergency sirens such as load switches flashers, conflict monitors, controllers, modems, etc.
  • Directs staff to set up appropriate traffic safety zones using signs, cones, flaggers, etc. in order to ensure personal and public safety.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Driver's License (Must be able to acquire a Class B CDL within the first year of employment).
  • Work experience establishing work zone safety when conducting work in a traffic environment.
  • Work experience applying and adhering to MUTCD in the maintenance and installation of traffic signals.
  • Work experience reading and interpreting electrical or electronic schematics and blueprints.
  • Work experience in electrical and electronics troubleshooting (e.g., working with voltages of 120v to 480v, using a multimeter, working with electricity and electrical circuits, etc.).
  • Work experience operating the controls of a Bucket truck.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • IMSA Certification Level One or higher.
  • Journeyman Electrician License.
  • Associate's degree or higher in Electronics or a closely related field of study.

CRITICAL KNOWLEDGES:

  • Knowledge of basic electronics to include circuitry design and repair.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures when working in and around traffic.
  • Knowledge of the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and other applicable standards related to traffic.
  • Knowledge of traffic laws and regulations involved with heavy or construction equipment operations and transportation.
  • Knowledge of traffic signal operation principles including justification, functionality, design, maintenance, and timing.
  • Knowledge of the principles of electricity such as units (e.g., amps, ohms, watts, volts), current flow, circuit, lock-out/tag-out, horsepower, SCADA systems, generators, transformers, and electrical controls.


WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Work is performed both within employer-owned facilities such as workshop, warehouse, or station and in field locations such as external construction worksites.
  • Work involves use of various hand tools such as hammer, screwdrivers, wrenches, etc.
  • Workers may be exposed to weather conditions, such as extreme hot or cold temperatures, or other potentially hazardous conditions such as near roadway traffic, etc.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Job involves moderate physical exertion required for occasional prolonged periods of lifting, carrying, balancing, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling.
  • Job May involve occasional lifting of items or objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
