Why MN Reading Corps at Northeast College Prep?
Do you want to close the opportunity gap while teaching reading one-on-one with Kindergarten – 3rd grade? Do you want to do it at a school that is committed to observing all teachers and tutors at least every other week? Do you want to do it at a school with a calm school culture where you can learn how to manage student behavior positively? Are you ready to change the life trajectory of a struggling reader working with them each day one on on one to improve their academic skills? If so, apply to Minnesota Reading Corps at Northeast College Prep!
Why at Northeast College Prep?
Focus on professional growth through observation, training and support
Calm and peaceful school culture allows you and the student to focus on reading interventions
Great way to get to know our school and staff in case opportunities open up in the future
As a tutor, you will have a year to observe and get coached by excellent teachers. At our school, our teachers get coached more in one school year than a traditional teacher would get observed in over a decade. If you are looking for a place to grow and perfect your teaching craft, consider our school.
You can choose a full-time, 75% time or 50% time position.
Who are we looking for?
Anyone who is committed to closing the opportunity gap
Anyone who believes that every student can learn
Someone who can build strong and positive relationships with students
Great attendance. Students and tutors read one-on-one together every day for 20 minutes in MN Reading Corps. The growth happens because the interventions happen daily. It is essential that the tutor has great attendance.
Anyone who has a GED or high school diploma and is 18 years of age or older.
MN Reading Corps
MN Reading Corps works with students in Kindergarten – 3rd grade. Research says that if students can read by 3rd grade on grade level, they are on a track toward academic success throughout their life. The tutor will implement reading interventions one-on-one with the student for 20 minutes a day. Training is provided.
It is much harder to get students up to grade level after 3rd grade (Northeast College Prep has other programs and supports for those students)
Will I be the only tutor?
There will be up to four tutors in total; some may be returning for a second year.
There is an Internal Coach on site every day who will supervise all four tutors. Her name is Laura and she is our Academic Interventions Coordinator. She coordinates all of the academic interventions and will be your direct supervisor.
We also have three Intervention teachers at our school.
What is the pay?
AmeriCorps living stipend provided throughout the year ($544 every two weeks for full-time tutors)
At completion of the program, an education award of approximarly $6,000 (full-time tutors) will be granted to help pay off student loans or school tuition in the future. If the tutor is over 55, they may transfer the education award to a child, step-child, grandchild or foster child.
We can supplement the pay with other jobs around the school. We pay $20/ride to ride the school bus to and from school to help with bus supervision. If someone doesn’t have transportation, this is another great way to help the school and get paid while getting a free commute. This paid opportunity can not count toward your AmeriCorps hours, it is in addition to your hours.

Minnesota Reading Corps Experience life-changing growth while supporting your local school. Become a Minnesota Reading Corps tutor and be a hero to students who struggle with reading. Whether you want to explore a career in education, re-enter the workforce, or give back to your community, you can make a difference as a tutor. Last year, Minnesota Reading Corps and Minnesota Math Corps tutors helped more than 35,000 children in more than 900 schools across the state. Tutors are needed at Northeast College Prep, and in schools across the metro for the 2019-20 school year.
As a tutor, you'll see a student's progress as they gain new skills and as they light up with confidence and the satisfaction of knowing they can do it. No child wants to stand out because they can’t learn as quickly as their classmates. We’re helping more kids catch up and soar on their own. And you can be part of it.
Tutors receive extensive training and support from onsite coaches. Tutors are paid a living allowance, given federal student loan forbearance, and are eligible for an education award of up to $5,775 at the end of their service. Tutors 55 or older may gift the award to their child or grandchild.
Here’s what a few tutors love about serving:
“I give the children in our community the individualized attention they need to thrive in school. This is awesome work that makes Minnesota mighty!” – Sarah W., children’s book author and former PreK teacher
“I absolutely love what I do! I get to come to school each day and see the kiddos I work with succeed.” – Andrea M., stay-at-home parent
